At Triad Of Health Family Healing Center in San Rafael, California, Dr. Ilya Skolnikoff, DC, DIBAK, takes a personalized approach to understanding your health history and exploring the factors that may be contributing to your concerns.
The foundation of this approach is Professional Applied Kinesiology and the Triad Of Health. The broader system that brings these and additional therapeutic approaches together is called The Skolnikoff Method.
The Skolnikoff Method is also the name of Dr. Skolnikoff’s best selling book that describes The Method and also the New Medicine and how this New Medicine has literally been documented to give hundreds and thousands of people back their lives when they were at the verge of giving up all hope— The Skolnikoff Method New Medicine For A New You: Inflammation Solutions Handbook is a journey that you must embark on and experience for yourself. Schedule Your ExaminationUnderstanding the Triad Of Health and The Skolnikoff Method
The Triad Of Health and The Skolnikoff Method are closely related, but they are not the same thing.
Both reflect a whole-person perspective on health. Both recognize the importance of considering structural, chemical, and emotional dimensions rather than viewing every symptom in isolation.
The difference is that the Triad Of Health represents the underlying framework associated with Professional Applied Kinesiology, while The Skolnikoff Method incorporates that framework into a broader, open ended system of assessment and care that includes a wide variety of other healing modalities.
Triad Of Health
Structural, Chemical and Emotional.
The Skolnikoff Method
A broader system that incorporates the Triad Of Health framework together with additional assessment methods, therapeutic techniques, and healing modalities.
The Triad Of Health: Three Interconnected Dimensions
The Triad Of Health organizes health into three primary dimensions:
STRUCTURAL — CHEMICAL — EMOTIONAL
These dimensions provide a framework for considering different aspects of a person's health and how they may interact.
Structural Health
Structural health concerns the physical dimension of the body, including muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, organs, glands, the spine, movement, and related physical functions.
Chemical Health
Chemical health encompasses nutritional and biochemical considerations, including dietary patterns, nutrient intake, digestion, and other relevant metabolic factors.
Emotional Health
Emotional health considers emotional well-being, stress, and other relevant aspects of the relationship between emotional experiences and physical health.
These dimensions are interconnected. For example, a person experiencing persistent physical discomfort may also have difficulty sleeping, changes in activity, nutritional challenges, or increased stress. A comprehensive assessment considers the person's circumstances rather than automatically assuming that one factor explains everything.
The Triad Of Health provides a way to organize this broader perspective within Professional Applied Kinesiology.
The Skolnikoff Method: Building on the Triad Of Health
The Skolnikoff Method takes the Triad Of Health framework further by incorporating additional assessment methods, therapeutic techniques, and resources that Dr. Skolnikoff has brought together through his professional training and experience.
Professional Applied Kinesiology is an important component of the method, but it is not the entirety of the method.
In addition to Applied Kinesiology and chiropractic approaches, The Skolnikoff Method may incorporate nutritional guidance, herbal products, homeopathy, flower essences, selected neurological and rehabilitation techniques, emotional and mind-body approaches, and other services offered at our practice.
The appropriate combination depends on the individual, their health history, their concerns, and the findings of their evaluation.
The Triad Of Health provides the framework. The Skolnikoff Method brings that framework together with a broader range of assessment and therapeutic options.
That is the essential distinction— and the essential connection.
Why Consider the Whole Person?
Each healthcare profession has its own training, methods, and areas of expertise. A surgeon, physical therapist, nutrition professional, psychotherapist, and chiropractor may each examine different aspects of a person's health.
Each perspective can be valuable. But when a person has multiple symptoms or a complicated health history, it can be helpful to examine how the different aspects of their experience relate to one another.
Consider someone who is struggling with persistent fatigue, digestive symptoms, and difficulty concentrating. Their concerns may warrant consideration of nutritional patterns, sleep, medical conditions, medications, emotional well-being, and other relevant factors.
No single explanation should be assumed in advance. The purpose of your comprehensive evaluation is to understand your specific circumstances, identify questions that need further investigation, and determine which approaches are most appropriate for you.
This is the philosophy behind The Skolnikoff Method: rather than automatically approaching every complaint you have as an isolated problem, we consider you as a whole.
Structural
Physical function, movement, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, organs, glands, and the spine.
Chemical
Nutritional patterns, nutrient intake, digestion, and relevant metabolic considerations.
Emotional
Emotional well-being, stress, and relevant mind-body considerations.
Understanding the Triad Of Health
Your Health History Matters
We want to understand what has happened throughout your health journey.
These questions help us develop a more complete picture of your experience and help us determine what to investigate next.
Our objective is not to promise that every symptom has one hidden cause. It is to examine your history carefully and consider relevant factors that might otherwise remain unexplored. Think of Dr. Skolnikoff as being like a health puzzle solver and you as being like the health puzzle that he solves. Once he recognizes and understands the pattern that is happening with your health as he has with thousands of other people with similar patterns over the last 20 years, then that means all the pieces of the puzzle should fall into place quite nicely, and he should be able to help you right away. If he is not able to discover your health puzzle, then we can always refer you to someone who can help you or order additional labs if necessary.
A Different Approach to Understanding Persistent Symptoms
When symptoms persist, it is natural to want relief. It is also reasonable to want to understand what may be contributing to them.
Many people are becoming fed up with the conventional medical care model because they are just screening for what medication you may need. If your disease is not serious enough to warrant medication right away, then they want to “keep an eye on it” until things get so much worse that you are not able to function without regular medication. For many of us, the conventional medicine model may be a necessary evil we must participate in, but it should not limit our lives like it often does. Many people want a change and need help examining their nutrition, lifestyle, physical function, emotional well-being, and common-sense options that are safer and more effective than needless surgeries and medications. Who wants to be on medication for the rest of their life if they don’t have to be? Now there are finally some fast, safe and effective options.
The Skolnikoff Method is designed to provide a broader perspective, working directly with your prescribing doctor.
Multiple factors are relevant to your health... our system works with multiple healthcare providers to get you the best results possible. Because we have so many disciplines that we use to support you with your health, many of our patients find that they no longer need their psychotherapist, surgeon, oncologist, rheumatologist, or other doctor in the way that they did before starting care. Healthy people don’t spend nearly as much time at the cardiologist, rheumatologist, or oncologist as sick people do. Most people go to these healthcare providers when they have a relatively serious chronic disease that needs to be managed. If the disease goes away, there is a lot less to manage. If there is less to manage, then these professionals make less money as a result of fewer patients. There is a bit of a conflict of interest when you really think about it. The primary goal of The Skolnikoff Method is to get sick people well, and we have been accomplishing that goal for more than two decades now.
Our approach may include nutritional and lifestyle guidance, chiropractic techniques, complementary therapies, and recommendations to other medical professionals when needed.
You are not simply a collection of symptoms. You are a person with a unique history, individual needs, and goals that deserve careful consideration.
This image below may help you to understand some of the differences between The Skolnikoff Method and the Triad Of Health. The image should be compared to the triangular image of the Triad Of Health as well as the logo from Applied Kinesiology found in the Triad Of Health section of our home page.
How the Four Dimensions of The Skolnikoff Method Relate to Our Services
The Triad Of Health provides the foundation for understanding three interconnected dimensions of health: structural, chemical, and emotional.
The Skolnikoff Method incorporates this framework and extends beyond it by also considering the spiritual dimension.
Together, these four dimensions provide a broader perspective on the whole person. They help us consider the physical body, the substances and nutrients to which it is exposed, the person's thoughts and emotional experiences, and the spiritual dimension of life.
Each dimension offers a different perspective, yet none exists entirely in isolation from the others. Your individual needs determine which aspects deserve attention and which therapeutic approaches may be appropriate.
1. Structural — The Body and Muscles and Physical Function and Movement
The structural dimension concerns the physical body, including muscles, bones, joints, posture, movement, and physical function.
Services and approaches that relate to this dimension include Professional Applied Kinesiology, chiropractic techniques, orthopedic rehabilitation, and selected neuromuscular and movement-based therapies.
Structural approaches may include:
- Chiropractic techniques.
- Professional Applied Kinesiology.
- Orthopedic rehabilitation.
- Craniosacral approaches.
- Balance and coordination therapy.
- Selected neuromuscular techniques.
- Ocular motor therapy.
- Neurological rehabilitation approaches.
- Physiotherapy
2. Chemical — Nutrition, Poisons, Digestion, and Metabolic Considerations
The chemical dimension considers nutrition and other substances that enter or affect the body, including food, nutrients, environmental exposures, and potentially harmful substances, as well as waste products the body processes.
Depending on your needs, relevant approaches may include nutritional guidance, herbal products, nutritional supplements, and evaluation of lifestyle or environmental factors.
Chemical and nutritional approaches may include:
- Personalized nutritional guidance.
- Whole-food nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals.
- Herbal products.
- Homeopathy.
- Flower essences.
- Dietary and lifestyle recommendations.
- Assessment of relevant digestive and metabolic concerns.
3. Emotional — Thought, Mental Function, Well-Being and Mind-Body Considerations
Where appropriate, complementary approaches may include selected emotional and mind-body techniques, relaxation approaches, and methods intended to support emotional well-being.
We recognize that emotional factors do not explain every physical symptom. The goal is to consider relevant aspects of your experience without overlooking medical, physical, or nutritional explanations that may also need attention.
The emotional dimension considers thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and relevant aspects of mental and emotional well-being.
Where appropriate, complementary approaches may include selected emotional, mind-body, and stress-management techniques.
4. Spiritual — Soul and Divine
The spiritual dimension reflects the role that soul, spiritual experience, and the divine may hold within The Skolnikoff Method's broader view of the person.
This dimension extends beyond the three-part Triad Of Health framework. It acknowledges that, for some people, spirituality is an important part of how they understand themselves, their lives, and their experience of health.
The distinction is simple: the Triad Of Health consists of three dimensions; The Skolnikoff Method incorporates those three and adds a fourth. This broader framework helps explain the scope of the method and the variety of approaches available within our practice.
These four dimensions help explain the framework behind our approach. In practice, a person's needs may involve more than one dimension, and the appropriate care plan is individualized. All of our care plan programs have at their foundation a custom tailored and personalized program— there are no cookie cutter approaches available in our office.

Other concerns may also warrant discussion, depending on the individual's circumstances. Many people in the San Francisco Bay Area have been exposed to mold. Some people have challenges with the air they breathe, what they drink, what they come into contact with, what they eat, or even what they smoke. Others have been exposed to poisons or toxins they did not know were poisonous or toxic, such as at the airport, in a restaurant, or a particular city.
As mentioned earlier, some conditions require coordinated care. Our examination helps us to determine whether the services we offer are appropriate for your needs. Some people are not a good fit for our office— our services are not for everyone.
Four Crucial Lifestyle Foundations We Focus On
A comprehensive health history also includes practical aspects of daily life that may influence well-being.
Water and Hydration
We consider hydration habits and whether adjustments may be appropriate.
Protein and Nutritional Balance
We review dietary quality, protein intake, and relevant nutritional needs.
Blood Sugar Stability
When relevant, we consider dietary patterns, meal composition, physical activity, and other factors affecting glucose regulation.
Digestive Health
We consider digestive symptoms, dietary patterns, and whether further evaluation may be warranted.
These areas are not substitutes for medical care. They are practical considerations that may contribute to an individualized wellness plan.

At the end of the exam, if we can help you, we will let you know, and we can also let you know how you can get started. If we are not able to help you, then we can look for someone who can help you.

The method was developed by Dr. Ilya Skolnikoff, DC, DIBAK, through years of professional training and experience with multiple therapeutic approaches. His approach integrates Professional Applied Kinesiology with other methods used in his practice.
3. How is The Skolnikoff Method different from Applied Kinesiology?
Professional Applied Kinesiology is an important component of The Skolnikoff Method, but The Skolnikoff Method incorporates additional assessment methods and complementary therapies.
Depending on the patient's needs, these may include nutritional guidance, herbal products, homeopathy, flower essences, and other services offered at the practice.
4. What health concerns can The Skolnikoff Method help address?
People seek individualized care for a range of concerns, including persistent fatigue, brain fog, digestive complaints, chronic pain, musculoskeletal problems, and thyroid or hormone-related concerns.
The appropriate approach depends on your health history, symptoms, clinical findings, and what type of medication you may or may not be using as well as other factors.
5. Does The Skolnikoff Method focus on root causes or symptoms?
The Skolnikoff Method is all about treating the root causes and not the symptoms. When we treat the underlying causes of the symptoms, not only do the symptoms go away, but they do not come back.
The first part is the diagnosis, the puzzle-solving process, where we investigate factors that are contributing to your persistent symptoms rather than focusing on each of your symptoms in isolation.
This process includes reviewing your unique health history, including lifestyle, physical function, nutrition, and other relevant factors.
What we do is very different. If we cannot find the underlying causes of your symptoms that you are coming in to get help with, then we will not accept you as a patient, but we can always find someone else who is able to help you and refer you out to that person.
6. What happens during an initial evaluation?
The initial evaluation focuses on understanding your health history, current symptoms, previous treatments, and goals.
Depending on your concerns, Dr. Skolnikoff may recommend a focused assessment addressing areas such as thyroid health, hormones, digestion, or inflammation-related concerns.
Findings help guide the discussion of potential next steps.
7. Does The Skolnikoff Method use muscle testing?
Professional Applied Kinesiology uses manual muscle testing as part of its assessment approach. Within The Skolnikoff Method, it is one component of a broader evaluation.
8. Does The Skolnikoff Method replace conventional medical care?
Our system, The Skolnikoff Method (and the Triad Of Health), does not treat diseases; rather, it treats what causes them. We treat the person who has the disease and not the disease.
We do this by understanding what are the underlying root causes that led to the imbalances that caused the disease to begin with. This way, when the disease goes away, it does not come back.
This approach is almost the opposite of treating the disease. Why? Because if we were to treat a disease and have it go away (which we do not do), then another new disease would just rear its ugly head in place of the old disease that we had just gotten rid of.
Imagine trying to kill a gopher that does not die. Each time you think you have killed it, you see it popping out of the hole again. This is what the conventional medical community keeps doing. We don’t want to have anything to do with that system.
Whatever you have done before now has failed you. If it hadn’t, then why would you be looking for other health solutions? The conventional medical model has most likely failed you.
You are looking for something different. If you keep doing the same thing repeatedly, you will keep getting the same results. Is that what you want?
If you want things to change, then you need to change. If you want things to get better, then you need to be better. If you want your health to get better than it is right now, then you need to do something different right away.
What we do is different. What we do is better. Our approach is unique, different, and better. We have the skills, training, and experience your medical doctor doesn’t, and that is one of the main reasons you are seeking out our services.
Our Skolnikoff Method Exam is all about solving your health puzzle. We need to get to the right starting point, and this happens at The Skolnikoff Method Exam.
We will discover everything you have done throughout your life that has led to the symptoms that you are struggling with today.
We want to know about any therapies that you have received that have helped reduce the symptoms, any therapies you have had that have not been helpful, and any therapies you used that helped to reduce the symptoms for a while and then stopped helping.
We want a complete worldview of everything that has happened throughout your entire life that has led you to become the person you are today, good qualities, bad qualities, and everything else included.
This will be instrumental in discovering what the patterns are that affect your health. Once we understand the pattern, then that is good news. That means we should be able to help you quickly.
Healthcare is all about recognizing patterns. This is the most important starting point— The Skolnikoff Method Exam.
The exam includes up to a 30-minute case history consultation with Dr. Skolnikoff, DC, DIBAK, a zinc taste test, oral temperature test, iodine skin testing, or pH testing, functional blood pressure testing on both arms in 3 different postural positions, the naturopathic exam, the gait analysis and postural analysis, and up to 30 different tests for behavioral and learning disorders.
We will check for nervous system and spine disease. We will do the chiropractic exam, the Traditional Chinese Medicine exam and pulse points analysis, the homeopathic constitutional exam, the vitalistic exam, and a variety of other exams.
Oftentimes we can get far more information from the methods of diagnosis and our examination methods than we could ever get from a blood lab or urinalysis.
If you have already had labs done during the last 6 months, then you should make a copy of the lab and bring it in with you to the exam.
At the end of the exam, if we can help you, we will let you know, and we can also let you know how you can get started. If we are not able to help you, then we can look for someone who can help you.
